In The Wild: Mandarin Chinese

One extension. Local lookup. Your words in context.

Hover Mandarin on a normal webpage for an immediate local lookup. You do not need an account until you want to save a word and carry its source context into Backpack and Review.

Start here

Get your first lookup in three steps

These steps apply to a supported extension installation you already have. Public extension distribution is not currently offered.

  1. Confirm and reload

If you already have a supported installation, reload any webpage that was open before its current build was loaded.

  2. Hover Mandarin

Open a normal article and hover or click the Chinese you want to understand. The lookup card shows the selected span, pinyin, part of speech, and meaning.

  3. Save when useful

Press M or choose a reading in the lookup card. If you are signed out, In The Wild will help you connect an account and then resume that exact save.

Troubleshooting

Fix the common snags

Try the matching recovery path below. If it still fails, send us the popup diagnostics and we will take it from there.

Nothing appears when I hover

Open the extension popup and make sure lookup is on for the current site, then reload the page once. Try a normal HTTPS article; Chrome blocks extensions on pages such as chrome://, the Chrome Web Store, and some browser-managed pages.

The extension says it needs a current build or reload

Reload the webpage first. If the installed build still cannot prove current readiness, email support. If an older In The Wild or standalone Anki extension is still installed, open chrome://extensions and disable it so only one In The Wild extension is active.

A save is waiting or will not sync

Keep the extension connected to the same account as the web app. Open the popup, reconnect if asked, and retry. Offline saves stay owner-bound and can sync when the connection returns; do not clear extension storage while a save is pending.

The lookup picked the wrong span or reading

Packaged dictionary choices appear only when the local parser does not resolve a target. Choose the reading that fits the sentence. If the parser result itself is wrong, send the word, surrounding sentence, and what you expected so we can reproduce it.

Optional Anki delivery is not working

In The Wild saves to your account first. Make sure Anki Desktop is open, AnkiConnect is installed, and you granted localhost permission after choosing Anki in Settings. A failed Anki delivery does not erase the In The Wild save.

Account and learning state

Use the same account everywhere

Your saved vocabulary, source context, Backpack, Review history, Reading progress, and settings belong to the account you connected. Lookup and selected-text translation remain available without an account.

You control what leaves the page

Hover parsing stays local. Account connection, saving, translation, and optional Anki delivery happen only after your action. Read the complete policy or email us about access, correction, export, or deletion.
